"Switch" is the tenth episode of Season 1, airing November 23, 2000. The episode opens with a major twist: the host announces that Tribes Vanua and Kadavu are merging into a single new tribe, retaining the Vanua name. The newly formed five-person tribe immediately competes against Tribe Yasawa in an immunity challenge and loses, sending them to Tribal Council where Denise Fuentes is voted out and sent to Extinction Island.
Story
On Day 19, all eleven remaining castaways are summoned to a neutral beach. The host reveals that due to the severe size imbalance — Kadavu with two members and Vanua with three — the two tribes will immediately merge. Former Vanua members Priya Nair, Colton Briggs, and Denise Fuentes join Kadavu's Nadine Kowalski and Tammy Ostrowski to form a new five-person Vanua tribe. Yasawa's six members remain untouched.
The merged Vanua tribe is immediately fractured. The three former Vanua members and the two former Kadavu members have no established trust, and within hours of arriving at a shared camp, cracks are already showing. Colton and Priya attempt to pull Nadine in as a swing vote, while Tammy gravitates toward Denise, sensing a bond with another older woman in the game.
At Tribal Council, the vote splits along former tribal lines — but Nadine sides with Colton and Priya, making it 3–2 against Denise. Tammy's lone vote for Colton goes nowhere.

Trivia
- The episode title "Switch" refers to the tribe swap, the biggest structural change in the game since the premiere.
- Denise Fuentes becomes the eighth castaway sent to Extinction Island. EI now holds eight residents — more than either active tribe.
- This is the first episode in which only two tribes compete, down from the original three-tribe format.
- Tribe Yasawa extends their unbeaten record to 8–0, having never attended Tribal Council in ten episodes.
- Nadine Kowalski's decision to side with the former Vanua majority is the first major cross-tribal alliance move of the season.
- The Wipeout challenge is the first team challenge of the season to feature only two tribes competing head-to-head.
