Season 1 of Extinction Island premiered September 21, 2000, on location in the Fiji Islands. Eighteen castaways were divided into three tribes — Vanua, Kadavu, and Yasawa — and tasked with outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting one another over what would become a 48-day game.
The season introduced the show's central twist: eliminated players are not sent home. They are marooned on a remote outcrop called Extinction Island, where they survive on minimal resources and wait for a single re-entry challenge that will return one of them to the game. In Season 1, twelve players lived on Extinction Island before Trevor Holt won his way back in Episode 16 — the rest were permanently eliminated.
The season is widely remembered for the Briggs–Nair showmance, Yasawa's historic pre-merge unbeaten streak, Kwame Asante's twelve-episode unused Steal-a-Vote, and Colton Briggs's five consecutive individual immunity wins to close the game. Colton won the jury vote 4–3 — the narrowest possible margin.

Notable Moments
- The Briggs–Nair showmance was confirmed in Episode 3 and remained the season's dominant storyline through Episode 17.
- Tribe Yasawa went 9–0 in tribal challenges — the only tribe to never attend Tribal Council before the merge.
- Kwame Asante held a Steal-a-Vote advantage for twelve consecutive episodes without ever playing it.
- Trevor Holt spent ten weeks on Extinction Island before winning his way back into the game in Episode 16 — then immediately won immunity on the same day.
- Colton Briggs won five consecutive individual immunity challenges to close out the game, the longest streak of Season 1.
- Episode 12 featured the season's only double elimination, sending both Tammy Ostrowski and Nadine Kowalski to Extinction Island in a single night.
- Episodes 17–18 formed a triple elimination event, eliminating Priya Nair, Petra Vance, and Celeste Monroe across two nights.
- Petra Vance voted against her own Importantés alliance partner Jonah Prescott in Episode 15 — widely considered the boldest individual move of the post-merge game.
- The season ran 48 days — nine days beyond the original 39-day format, extended to accommodate the Extinction Island twist.
- The final jury vote of 4–3 is the narrowest possible result for a seven-person jury.
